Five weeks into the 2008 football season, Todd Gurley stepped on to the Tarboro High School practice field looking for a ride home. Former Tarboro High assistant coach Bo Robinson rode Gurley about not coming out for football and Gurley was at practice the day.

Many have claimed the moniker, “Maybe the next Herschel Walker.” Gurley could have been the next Herschel.

An athletic speedster who ran Track for Team USA in Europe during the Spring and Summer of 2011, Gurley came to Georgia the number 5 recruit in North Carolina and the number five ranked running back in the country.

So much for recruit rankings.

Gurley scored 44 career TDs, second to Walker, 4,322 all-purpose yards and 3,285 rushing yards, second to Walker, set a record career 6.44 average gain per rush, finished second in Georgia history with 18 100 yard rushing games, and is one of only four Bulldogs with over 3,000 career rushing yards.

Because of injury and his personal indiscretion, Gurley and Georgia rarely played on the biggest stage and the promise of “The Next Herschel Walker” remains unfulfilled.
