UGA has made it a habit to churn out pro-level offensive linemen during the Dooley era. Few names, however, are more celebrated than that of Royce Smith. Hailing from Savannah, Smith took time to acclimate himself to the collegiate level, and while eventually raising his weight from 190 to 250 he was still able to produce a 4.8 forty-yard dash time and bench press 430lbs (both offensive lineman records at the time).

Following his senior season, Royce was named a consensus All-American, All-SEC and was awarded the Jacobs Blocking award for most outstanding SEC blocker. January 17th, 1972 was proclaimed “Royce Smith Day” by the mayor of his hometown in Savannah.
