3 – Frank Sinkwich

The son of Croatian immigrants, Frank Sinkwich is Georgia’s first Heisman Trophy winner and the first Heisman Trophy winner born outside of the United States.

Raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Sinkwich chose Georgia for his college home after Georgia backfield coach Bill Hartman offered his Cheney High School teammate George Poschner a scholarship. It may have been the most profitable package deal ever, as Poschner was a 1942 All-American.

As a junior in 1941, Sinkwich was named All-American after setting SEC rushing and total yard records while playing from the third game on with a broken jaw.
As a senior in 1942, Sinkwich set SEC passing and total offense records while leading Georgia to an SEC record 4,725 yards of total team offense. Playing with two sprained ankles, he scored Georgia’s only TD in 9-0 victory over UCLA in the Rose Bowl. After enlisting in the Marines, the unanimous All-American received his Heisman Trophy in his Dress Blues.
