GEORGIA FOOTBALL: TOP 30 PLAYERS IN SCHOOL HISTORY
29 – Buck Belue
Buck Belue held his immense athletic ability concealed, revealing his talent only in times of great need. The obvious examples are the 1980 Gator Bowl miracle and the last pass – and only completion – against Notre Dame, sealing victory and winning the 1980 National Championship.
Belue rose to the occasion in his final game, a second half duel with Dan Marino in the 1982 season Sugar Bowl finale.
Belue rose to the occasion his first season in the 1978 Georgia Tech Game when as a freshman, he led Georgia from behind to win on a final minute fourth down scramble and pass to Amp Arnold for a touchdown followed by a two point conversion option pitch, again to Amp Arnold, for the winning points.
Belue, a great athlete with courage and skill, was blessed and cursed to have Herschel Walker at tailback his final two seasons. All Belue did was win, but he won by becoming the greatest toss sweep quarterback in the history of the game. With his passing skills so rarely revealed, Belue is remembered as a mere winner. And that’s enough.
