GEORGIA FOOTBALL: TOP 30 PLAYERS IN SCHOOL HISTORY
25 – Rodney Hampton
Born in Houston, Texas Rodney Hampton came to Georgia in 1987, passing on the wishbone offenses of the Southwest Conference for the tailback tradition of Georgia.
In 1988 Tim Worley and Keith Henderson, having completed a year of junior college penance, joined Hampton and fellow sophomore fullback Alphonso Ellis. The quartet, hailed as Georgia’s“Four Horseman,” was likely the most talented group of Bulldog running backs not to include someone named Walker.
In 1988, Hampton became a one-man offense while rushing for over 1000 yards before succumbing to injury on the Grant Field Turf.
The New York Giants drafted Hampton with the 24th overall pick in 1990. Hampton’s unusual combination of power and shiftiness earned him multiple all-pro honors, recognition as one of the 50 greatest players in Giants’ History by Robert Cohen, and a nine year career that ended with Giant’s general manager Ernie Arcosi stating, “Words come up short when trying to explain what Rodney has meant to the entire organization. He has conducted himself with great pride and dignity.”
