The Kirby Smart era of Georgia Football has already begun, but the inaugural walk into Sanford Stadium for Coach Smart will be celebrated with a unique Dawg Walk.

Social media was buzzing this morning after Greg McGarity appeared on WSB-TV’s Georgia Bulldogs segment and announced that G-Day, also known as #93Kday on Twitter, will feature a Dawg Walk.

The Dawg Walk is a pre-game ritual for the Georgia Football team, but that ritual is typically only honored during the regular season.

There has never been an official Dawg Walk on G-Day, so this is a first time occurrence likely orchestrated by Kirby Smart and McGarity in order to increase hype for the annual spring game. This announcement comes after Smart has developed a high profile presence on Twitter.

Smart created a Twitter account back in December, almost immediately after his announcement as head coach. Since then, he has developed a strong presence on the social media platform by earning 56.3 thousand followers in approximately three months. The new head coach is more active on the platform than previous head coach Mark Richt was, and he is currently using it to hook more fans on to the Smart train, which is on a direct route for G-Day.

The G-Day game typically has a smaller audience than any regular season games. It easily doubled during the Mark Richt era, but that audience was still only filling about half of the stadium every year. Last year, attendance was approximately 46,815.

This year, Smart wants the stadium filled to capacity and, potentially, past capacity. Recent reports out of Athens say Smart wants 100,000 fans at Sanford Stadium on April 16th, which would be 7,000 overcapacity for the Bulldog’s stadium.

The cards are playing in the Bulldogs favor this year. More often than not, the G-Day game falls on the same weekend as Augusta National’s The Masters Tournament, but in 2016, the tournament will be held the week prior to the annual Spring Game.

If Smart gets his wish, the 2016 spring game will be a record-breaking beginning to his inaugural season as the head football coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.

The 2016 G-Day Game will be held at Sanford Stadium on April 16 at 4 p.m. Admission is free, but fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to a local charity.
