Georgia maintained control of its contest against Tech Tuesday evening, ultimately leaving Atlanta with a 3-1 win as the team tries to stay above .500.

An outstanding overall pitching performance from junior Andrew Giest, who pitched all the way into the ninth inning, was key for the team’s successful performance. Giest held the Yellow Jackets scoreless through the first eight innings of play, only giving up a home run in the top of the ninth for Tech’s only score.

Georgia had hot bats throughout the game, compiling a total of ten hits over the course of the game.  They forced Tech to use a total of five pitchers to get them through the game.  The Bulldogs could have scored more as they left eight runners on base during the course of the game.  The Georgia offense was led by freshman catcher Michael Curry who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Neither team could get on the scoreboard early in the game as the first four innings were scoreless. Giest struck out four of the first six batters he faced and had good play from the infield, which converted two double plays that closed out early innings.

Giest retired after giving up the home run to Tech’s Ryan Peurifoy in the ninth inning. Sophomore right hander Blake Cairnes finished off the game for the Bulldogs with three strikeouts.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 18-16 on the season.Next up for the Diamond Dawgs will be a three game series against the No. 2 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in Athens, Ga., beginning April 15th.
