The No. 12 Georgia softball team soundly beat unranked Georgia State at home on Wednesday evening, snapping the Panthers five game win streak and improving to 37-10 overall.

The Bulldogs started off slow through the first two innings with the only run coming from Alyssa DiCarlo as she capitalized off a wild pitch.

The team’s momentum kicked in during the third inning as Sydni Emanuel scored on a fielding error by the second baseman followed by Alex Hugo and DiCarlo batting in Cortni Emanuel and Maeve McGuire. With the three runs, Georgia went up on Georgia State 4-0 heading into the fourth.

Tina Iosefa changed the outlook of the game completely with a homerun over center field during the bottom of the fourth that batted in the Emanuel sisters, Alex Hugo, and herself.

Although Georgia State came into the match up unranked, their recent success could have meant trouble for the Bulldogs. Instead, the team took the competition in stride and started off strong. They finished off the Panthers early after the grand slam by Tina Iosefa, her third of the season, all but sealed the deal.

“I was just looking for a good pitch and putting a good swing on it,” Iosefa said after the game.

The senior currently has 17 home runs on the season and leads NCAA Division 1 softball with 68 runs batted in.

Iosefa’s teammate and freshman pitcher Kylie Bass stepped up to the plate during the fifth inning and struck out the Panthers to wrap it up for the Bulldogs.

“She did awesome,” Iosefa said of her young teammate. “She spun the ball really well.”

After five innings of play, Bass accumulated a 0.90 earned run average, improving her current ERA. She currently ranks eighth in Division 1 softball in ERA.

The win for the Bulldogs signifies a much needed boost to the team’s momentum as they prepare to enter the final stretch of the regular season before the SEC Tournament in May.

With an impending series set to begin on Friday against No. 2 ranked Auburn, the team will look to upset their longtime rival.

Georgia is set to take on Auburn on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Auburn in front of a sell out crowd.

After the remaining series against Auburn, the Bulldogs will take on Ole Miss and No. 4 Alabama in two series to wrap up the regular season.
