Why Saban, Spurrier are not wrong about UGA

Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier raised eyebrows this week when they said UGA was the best job in the SEC.

What they said makes sense though. Georgia is definitely one of the top jobs in the SEC and in the country.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban told Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports his views on the subject,

“Personally, Georgia, if it’s not the best job in the conference, it certainly should be.”

Saban said this while being interviewed about Kirby Smart going to UGA. He thought Smart, who has served for nine years under Saban at Alabama, would do just fine at the helm in Athens.

A couple of days later, Steve Spurrier was interviewed on the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum Show and agreed with Saban when asked about the topic.

“I think Georgia and LSU are basically the best two,” said Spurrier.

That says a lot coming from Steve Spurrier who certainly doesn’t have the best relationship with Georgia fans as he found ways to beat them more often than not at South Carolina and especially in his days at Florida. He was a constant thorn in their side.

When two of the best coaches (six national championships combined) in SEC history speak up, people tend to listen. Some were surprised by their admission that UGA is the best job in the SEC, but they’re not wrong.

Georgia is a top job in the conference and one of the best jobs in the country for several reasons. First, the amount of football talent in the state of Georgia alone is absolutely ridiculous. Players such as Champ Bailey, Cam Newton, Ronnie Brown and Calvin Johnson among others all hail from the state of Georgia. It is definitely one of the most fertile states recruiting-wise in the entire country.

Second, the Bulldogs do not have a daunting state rival. Georgia is 65-40-5 all time versus in-state rival Georgia Tech. UGA has also won 13 of the last 15 meetings between the schools. Although Ga. Tech-Georgia games are usually competitive, Georgia has had their number more often than not.

Third, UGA is obviously in the best conference in the country, and the recruits they can attract based on this alone is notable indeed. Also, UGA has an ideal location, and many are attracted to the campus and the Athens atmosphere.

That’s the reason UGA AD Greg McGarity hired Smart. He knows what Georgia is capable of. The program has all the resources to be the best. With the right leadership, UGA’s potential is through the roof. They are the ultimate sleeping giant.

The question that is asked by many Georgia fans when looking at other programs’ success around them sums the situation up best. Why not Georgia?
