Robert Tyler drafted 38th by the Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies nabbed star Georgia pitcher Robert Tyler on night one of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Tyler, who just completed his junior season with the Georgia baseball team, was taken in the Lottery A Round and 38th overall. He was long considered a higher first-round pick but saw his draft stock fall after an inconsistent junior campaign.
The hard-throwing right handed pitcher finished his career with the Diamond Dogs with a 10-10 record. Tyler’s career earned run average was a solid 3.62, and he struck out 182 batters in his three seasons, including 89 in 2016.
Tyler suffered a right forearm strain during the 2015 season, which kept him on the bench for 39 of Georgia’s games. He was strong when he returned to close out that season, but was hampered by control issues this past season.

The Cordele, Georgia, native was previously drafted out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles in the 28th round of the 2013 MLB Draft but elected to attend the University of Georgia. Though his jump to the professional ranks is not yet official, as Tyler has until July 15 to sign with the Rockies, it does seem likely that Tyler’s played his final game in a Diamond Dogs uniform.
Georgia could possibly lose more players to the draft. Center fielder Stephen Wrenn would likely be the next player selected, while pitchers Connor Jones and Heath Holder could be scooped up in the later rounds. Right fielder Skyler Weber may sneak into the draft after an impressive junior season.
The 2016 MLB Draft continues through Saturday.
