Kirby Smart got a huge commitment on Sunday in the form of running back Toneil Carter. Carter announced his collegiate intentions via a Bleacher Report Facebook Live video at the Nike’s the Opening today.

The addition of Carter is a big one for UGA. The 5-11, 179 pound Houston, Texas, native is rated by 247 Sports as a 4-star prospect, the No. 16 overall prospect in the state of Texas and the No. 5 running back in the nation.

Carter certainly has made a name for himself in Texas 6A football. Last year, Carter rushed for 1,206 yards and 17 touchdowns. He averaged 8.5 yards per carry and over 120 yards a game.

He is a top running back prospect for a reason. He has the perfect blend of speed (4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash according to Hudl), shiftiness and power.

But what made a Texas kid inspired to go east and attend the University of Georgia? It all started with former UGA great Herschel Walker.

“I saw that ‘30 for 30’ on Herschel,” Carter said according to Dawg Nation. “What running back would not be inspired by his work ethic? Racing trains as a kid and stuff like that? Come on. That’s as good as it gets right there. That’s stuff that I would not even think to do to be great. If I had to go there, I would. I just wouldn’t have thought about stuff like that as a kid.”

He has also seen the recent success of other guys at his position and wants to be a part of “Running Back U.”

“I just want to be like them and go places. No matter what or who is the coach there the University of Georgia will always be a running back school.”

With Carter’s commitment, Kirby Smart and UGA have 14 verbal commits in a star-studded 2017 recruiting class. It is only going to get better.
