For the first time since 1990, no Georgia football player has been selected by the coaches association to an All-SEC team.

The 2016 Georgia football season was a disappointment, but know one thought it could get this disappointing. Out of all the great players on the roster, not one was selected by the coaches to be on either the first or second All-SEC team.

Even in Georgia’s 6-7 season in 2010, Justin Houston earned All-SEC honors. But it is still understandable that no one made an All-SEC team.

Why Georgia football missed out

Georgia was not all that good at the line of scrimmage on offense or defense. The offensive line struggled to open up room for Nick Chubb or Sony Michel to run and Jacob Eason was not able to become comfortable in the pocket far too often.

The defensive line and linebackers were good against the run, but had trouble containing mobile quarterbacks and never created a consistent pass rush at all in 2016.

Moving on to skill positions. There were issues of drops at wide receiver among everyone, even the team leader in catches and yards Isaiah Mckenzie dropped too many passes and that kept him from being considered for either All-SEC team.

Nick Chubb and Sony Michel struggled behind a mediocre offensive line. Neither rushed for 1,000 yards, after Chubb reached 700 yards in only five games and Michel ran for 1,000 in 2015. Michel also missed almost all of the first two games in 2016 with an injury he suffered in August.

Jacob Eason looked good as a freshman and maybe should have at least made the second team. But only throwing 14 touchdown passes probably hurt his chances.

Lastly, the defensive backs played pretty well as a unit, but no one stood out. Georgia only had one interception returned for a touchdown. Plus, neither cornerback could be considered a shutdown corner like Florida’s Jalen Tabor.

But there is still hope for the Bulldogs to get on a Coaches All-SEC team. This Friday the SEC All-Freshman team will be announced. Jacob Eason is unlikely to make the team since Alabama’s Jalen Hurts is a first team All-SEC player. But Isaac Nauta and Rodrigo Blankenship could make the All-Freshman squad.
