With Brice Ramsey officially transferring for his final year of availability, UGA only has 2 scholarship quarterbacks going into the spring. It’s highly unlikely to add anymore either which means that Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason are going to battle it out alone.
Kirby Smart hasn’t be sparing with his praise of freshman Fromm and it’s very clear that he expects him to push the incumbent. Jacob Eason has all the talent to make a huge jump in 2017 and having Fromm breathing down his neck should be good for him. All great players need someone to push them.
Having two highly regarded former 5-stars at QB isn’t a problem a lot of programs have. However, the lack of class separation here alongside a senior backup is somewhat concerning. A best case scenario for Georgia would be that Fromm is able to redshirt 2017, giving them 3 years of availability with him after Eason likely leaves in 2018.
However with no other scholarship backup on the roster, coaches will be hoping Eason stays healthy. A nagging injury that puts him out for one or two quarters could force them to burn Fromm’s redshirt. It will be interesting to see how preferred walk on Sam Vaughn looks. His ability to step in if there is an emergency might be crucial if Georgia is going to get Fromm that Redshirt.
