By 1959, the Wally Butts era was coming to a close. After winning three SEC Championships in the 1940’s, Georgia went 41-48-5 from 1950-to-1958. But Butts’s Bulldogs had one more great year left in them.

In 1959, Georgia went 10-1 and won the SEC Championship for the fourth time. Their only loss that year came to South Carolina in the third week of the season. Georgia won seven straight regular season games after that, then finished with a 14-0 win over Missouri.

But if the Bulldogs had not have lost to South Carolina, they would have ended 1959 undefeated and could have possibly split the National Championship of that year with Syracuse, the only other undefeated team.

Wally Butts retired after the 1960 season so the 1959 team was his last SEC Championship team and the last with a shot at winning a national title.
