4. Janet Harris – Women’s Basketball

Five different Lady Dawgs have scored 2,000 career points. Most of them only surpassed that milestone by a couple hundred. But not Janet Harris. No, Harris didn’t just eclipse 2,000 points, but she added another 641 points.

Her 2,641 is no doubt a school record. the closest player to her is Tasha Humphrey who scored 2,272 points.

Harris also appears in the top 10 scoring seasons three times. She has the second, third and forth most points in a single season with 700 (1984-85), 692 (1982-83) and 663 (1981-82).

Her 20.2 points per game is also a school record. She once again appears three times in the top 10 for most points per game in a season. Her 22.1 points per game in 1981-82 is third all-time. She also averaged 20.6 in 1984-85 and 20.4 in 1982-83.

Harris was  also an outstanding rebounder for Georgia and she’s still the only player in school history, and just the third in SEC history, to average over 20 points per game and over 10 rebounds per game.

But more importantly than that, before Harris arrived at Georgia, the women’s basketball program was one of the more obscure in the nation. Since their establishment in 1973, Georgia women’s basketball only had one winning season until Andy Landers became head coach in 1979.

And while the first two years with Landers were great, it wasn’t until Janet Harris joined the Lady Dawgs that the program took off. The former no. 1 high school player joined Georgia for the 1981-82 season and led them to a 21-9 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

A year later, they were SEC Champions and they reached the Final Four. In 1984, Georgia won the SEC again and were eliminated in the Elite Eight. Georgia was unable to secure a third-straight SEC title in 1985, but with Harris’s leadership, the Lady Dawgs finished 30-3 and lost in the NCAA Championship Game.

Harris was the first great player in school history and her induction into the Women’s basketball Hall of Fame in 2015 was very long overdue.
