Georgia football: Current NFL stars you probably don’t know lost to the Bulldogs
Drew Brees – Purdue
If you’re an older fan, you might already know this one. If you’re a younger fan however, you probably don’t. But after the 1999 season, Georgia met a Purdue Boilermaker team led by Drew Brees (and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney) in the Outback Bowl.
That game was actually the first game of the new millennium. Brees and the Boilermakers opened the game with a 25-0 lead into the second quarter. The comeback began when Terrance Edwards took an end-around 74 yards to the end zone, cutting the lead to 25-7.
After a pair of missed field goals by Purdue and 11 unanswered points going into the games final minutes, Randy McMichael caught a tipped pass in the end zone to tie the game with only a little over a minute left. Georgia made a field goal in overtime to win the game 28-25.
You don’t need me to tell you what kind of career Drew Brees went on to have in the NFL. He has spent 16 years in the league playing with the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints. he’s a 10-time Pro Bowler, MVP of Super Bowl XLIV and 2-time Offensive Player of the Year.
He owns the NFL record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass at 54, and he’s tied the record for touchdown passes in a game with seven. Brees has 66,111 career passing yards and 465 touchdown passes.
