For Georgia Baseball, the week started off great with a 5-1 win over hated Georgia Tech. Anytime UGA beats Tech it’s a good day. Then the weekend came and the Arkansas Razorbacks swept the Dawgs easily. Georgia is now 15-22 (4-11 SEC).
Game 1
Arkansas clobbered Georgia 14-4. This game featured a lot of home runs and a wild 7 run 3rd inning for the Razorbacks.
Blaine Knight started for Arkansas and got the win. He threw 6 innings, gave up 1 run, and struck out 5. Arkansas brought their bats as well hitting 5 home runs. The home runs were hit by Jax Biggers, Chad Spanberger, Alex Gosser, Luke Bonfield, and Carson Shaddy.
Blakely Brown got the nod for the Dawgs, but it was a tough outing. The sophomore right hander threw 2 innings and gave up 7 runs. Michael Curry went 3-4 with 2 homeruns, and knocked in all 4 runs for UGA.
Game 2
This was by far the closest game of the series. Arkansas would win 5-4 in the 10th inning. Georgia would score 2 runs in the 9th to force extra innings, but found a way to lose on a walk off error.
Jake Reindl got the victory for the Razorbacks, even though he only faced 2 batters. Luke Bonfield went 2-5 with a homerun and 2 RBI.
Blake Cairnes got the loss in this game, giving up the run on the walk off error. Michael Curry went 3-4 with a homerun and 2 RBI.
Game 3
Georgia would score first with a run in the 1st inning, but Arkansas answered with 7 in the 2nd and never looked back. Arkansas would complete the sweep with an 11-3 victory.
Kevin Kopps got the Arkansas victory, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings. Chad Spanberger went 2-5 with a homerun and 3 RBI.
Chase Adkins had a rough start. He threw 1.1 innings and gave up 7 runs. Tucker Maxwell went 1-4 with a solo homerun.
Conclusion
A rough season gets rougher for UGA. Georgia are now 15-22, second only to Alabama in terms of worst record in the SEC. They are also rock bottom of the SEC East. Fortunately Tennessee are also only 4-11 in conference play so UGA are not too far off the second from bottom place. That’s about as good as this season could get for UGA, coming 6th in the SEC East. In short, 2017 is beginning to look like a bit of a lost cause for the bulldogs.
They have series against Florida, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and South Carolina all ahead of them. All of these programs are having decent seasons and are traditional SEC powers. There is a good chance, Georgia could be looking at a historically bad 2017 if they continue to lose at this rate. What that would mean for the program as a whole is up for debate.
Coach Scott Stricklin led Kent State to the College World Series in just 2012. His first 4 seasons at UGA have overall been a huge disappointment however and if the Dawgs continue to lose this year, he might not reach year 5.
