4. Robert Edwards

tell me if you’ve heard this one before. Georgia travels to Tennessee with a really good running game led by a very talented running back. Said running back gets injured and Georgia looses a close game to the Volunteers.

Yes, that description fits Nick Chubb perfectly but it also fits the player at no. 4 on our countdown; Robert Edwards.

With a great game in Georgia’s season opener against South Carolina, the former defensive back proved his potential as a running back going into the trip to Knoxville. After a great start, Edwards injured his ankle and the Bulldogs ended up losing 30-27.

In not even two games that season, Edwards had 45 carries for 325 yards with six touchdowns and two catches for 42 yards and another touchdown. Without him, Georgia’s offense was stagnant, scoring less than 20 points in seven of their final 10 games. The Bulldogs lost three of those games and finished the year 6-6.

Edwards wasn’t quite the same after that injury, but he did return to rush for 800 yards in 1996 and 908 yards in 1997. He finished his career with 2,033 yards and 27 touchdowns. But who knows what Edwards could have accomplished without his injury.
