That was really fun . I needed that, and it seemed a lot of Georgia football fans did. The 2017 edition of the G Day game is now officially in the books. Now the long wait until September begins.

My kids and I were able to go, and it was an awesome time. So here’s a brief rundown of this writer’s day, a few highlights of the action, and a few observations I made of the 2017 Georgia Football Spring game.

1. Good pre game atmosphere.

The weather was great.  It was a little warm, but everyone seemed to be in good spirits. There was a lot of tailgating going on, and you could tell how much people had missed football.

On our way to the stadium, we saw the son of the late UGA Superfan Mike “Big Dawg” Woods. He had his shaved head painted with the words , “Family tradition, to be cont. 9/2/17.” He was taking pictures with people just like his father did for so many years, and of course we got one with him and my kids. Really cool to see him carrying on that tradition.

2. Pretty big crowd.

I said all week that anyone who was expecting a crowd like 2016 was going to be disappointed. No rappers were there. The coaching staff isn’t new anymore. Last year was unreal, I don’t know that we will ever see another G Day like that.

But yesterday wasn’t a failure at all. The official attendance was listed at 66,133. That was second in the SEC to only Alabama! Recruits notice these things, and there were some big names present Saturday like the no. 1 rated running back in the nation, Zamir White.

3. Jake Fromm looked better than Jacob Eason.

Now we get to some of the tricky stuff. Jake Fromm looked more comfortable. He was more mobile and seemed to be more in tune with his receivers on the red team . Even though Eason ended up with more passing yards (over 300), Fromm looked like the better quarterback.

This is when we as fans shouldn’t overreact. I wrote an article on Eason and Fromm just a few days ago, and my mind is not changed by a scrimmage performance.  Fromm will be the starter one day, and he will be a baller. But it’s Eason’s job right now.

4. The young wide receivers.

It seems like we have more speed and athleticism at the position than last year. J.J. Holloman and Mecole Hardman are both young guys that while from different classes, will be playing their first year in the SEC at wide receiver. I look for big things from both of them.

Combine those two with guys like Javon Wims and Terry Godwin who have some experience under their belt, Isaac Nauta in his second year at tight end, and Jacob Eason using his cannon of an arm to get them the ball and I see much more production from the receiving corps in 2017 than 2016.

5. Team “Georgia Red” won a tight one.

The red team (led by Jake Fromm) beat the black team (led by Jacob Eason) by a score of 25 -22 in a competitive, fun game. While there were a few things that stood out in this game, we have to keep in mind it was a scrimmage.

There’s still a lot of practices left until the season starts and Kirby Smart will have the right guys in place by game one to make us a contender in the SEC East.
