Georgia Football: How are Notre Dame looking this spring?
Coaching changes:
Although Brian Kelly stayed in South Bend after last years disappointing season, he jettisoned pretty much everyone else form his coaching staff. The Irish have two new coordinators and both are young and were hired with great fanfare.
Mike Elko was brought in from Wake Forest to head up the defense. He took the Demon-Decons to the number 20 scoring defense last year. an impressive achievement at a program not known for recruiting. SI writer Pete Thamel reported that his main mandate from Kelly is to get younger players onto the field quicker. Kelly feels that his top young talent was not being developed by Brian Van Gorder.
Chip Long was brought in from Memphis where he oversaw a potent offense. The 33 year old is taking over play calling duties so Kelly can step back into a CEO role with the team. It’s one of the many changes Kelly has taken this year after the disappointment of 2016. All of his moves have been met with a wide range of praise from fans and pundits, but until we get to actual football, nobody will really know how they are going to work out.
