3. Pittsburgh Panthers

Two of the toughest losses of the Vince Dooley era came against the Pittsburgh Panthers. In the 1977 Sugar Bowl, Heisman winner Tony Dorsett led the Panthers to a 27-3 win and a National Championship. In the 1982 Sugar Bowl, Dan Marino led Pittsburgh to a 24-20 victory on a hail mary.

But Georgia has played Pittsburgh four times. In the other two games, they tied in 1973 and Georgia lost 19-9 to open the 1975 season.

Recently, Pittsburgh hasn’t been all that great. They’ve only had once 10-win season since 1981 (2009) and they’ve had 14 losing seasons. But Pittsburgh is a program with nine National Championships and 51 All-American’s.

Despite playing four times in nine years, Georgia and Pittsburgh have not met since the 1982 Sugar Bowl. Now that the Panthers are in the ACC a meeting between the two seems more likely than ever. The SEC and ACC have a lot of games against each other and the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff has featured an SEC vs. ACC game eight of the 11 times.

Now it’s just a waiting game for Georgia to finally get the chance to avenge those two heartbreaking losses.
