7. Stanford Cardinal

Georgia and Stanford have met one time in the long histories of both programs. In 1978, the Cardinal defeated the Bulldogs 25-22 in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

The Cardinal are one of the best programs in college football history despite their checkered past. Stanford has two national titles (1926 and 1940) but after Bill Walsh left to coach the San Francisco 49ers in 1979, the Cardinal struggled to find any consistency for 30 years.

And then Jim Harbaugh came and left with a 12-1 season and David Shaw has gone on to lead the program to 64 wins in six years. Even without a national title, this is the greatest prolonged period of success since the “Pop” warner era in the 1920’s.

Plus they play a smash-mouth style that seems to fit in more with the SEC than the Pac 12. Georgia versus Stanford today would be an intriguing match-up all around. It’s time to make that happen.
