6. West Virginia Mountaineers

This one hurts to talk about. Georgia had just won the 2005 SEC Championship and because of Hurricane Katrina, we were returning to the Georgia Dome to play the Big East Champs West Virginia.

It was our own backyard against a team that we should have handled. But instead, a true freshman quarterback in pat White helped the Mountaineers take a 28-0 lead in the second quarter. D.J. Shockley and the Bulldogs did come back to make it close, but they still lost 38-35.

Georgia also allowed freshman Steve Slaton rush for 200-plus yards and gave up two touchdown catches by freshman Darius Raynaud.

So far, this is the first and only meeting between Georgia and West Virginia. They are certainly a team high on many Georgia’s fans lists of who they want to beat because of how embarrassing the Sugar Bowl loss was.

But West Virginia is also a wanted match-up for how good they’ve been historically and in the present. The Mountaineers have 15 conference titles in the (eight in the Southern, seven in the Big East) despite spending 66 years as an independent.

West Virginia has never won a national title but they have nine 10-win seasons and 737 all-time wins.
