2. Michigan Wolverines

Earlier we mentioned how Yale was one of the top programs in college football in the sports early decades. But as the 1930’s came, Yale (and other Ivy League teams) became less relevant in the college football landscape.

One of those teams that rose in the early 1900’s to help kick the Ivy League’s off of the college football mantle was the Michigan Wolverines.

The first national title that Michigan claims was in 1901. They also claim titles in 1902, 1903 and 1904. All before the founding of the NCAA in 1905. Michigan won another six national titles before 1950 giving the Wolverines 10 championships in 50 years.

However, Michigan found National titles tougher to come by as more programs like Notre Dame, Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma and Nebraska became elite, annual national title contenders. But Michigan did climb the mountain one more time in 1997 to show that the school is still capable of producing champions.

Georgia and Michigan first met in 1955 and the 7-2 Michigan team defeated Georgia 26-0. But The Bulldogs traveled back up to Ann Arbor 10 years later and defeated them 15-7. That was the last time Georgia and Michigan have met.

There’s always hopes for Bowl games and Jim Harbaugh doesn’t seem like the type to shy away from tough non-conference games so far. So maybe Georgia and Michigan could meet again soon.
