7. Penn State Nittany Lions

Georgia and Penn State are too of the most storied teams in college football, and yet, it’s taken bowl games to get the two teams matched up.

Georgia and Penn State first met in the 1983 Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs were no. 1 and 11-0 while Penn State was no. 2 and 10-1. In a rarity of that time, the top two teams were playing in a bowl game to decide the national championship. The Nittany Lions won the game 27-23.

The two wouldn’t play again until 2015 when they met in the Tax Slayer Bowl (never forgive Tax Slayer for taking full naming rights of what should still be called the Gator Bowl). Georgia got their revenge that day in a 24-17 victory.

Penn State’s win over Georgia in 1982 won them their first national title. They currently claim two after defeating Miami in 1985, but they’ve been named national champion by various selectors and polls 14 other times, including 1994 when they went undefeated and won the Rose Bowl.

Penn State also has 12 undefeated seasons and seven perfect seasons. The fact that Penn State doesn’t claim more national championships seems odd with all of those undefeated years including doing 11-0 in 1968 and 1969, and 12-0 in 1973.

The series is tied 1-1 and with the SEC and Big 10 not playing in as many bowls against each other as they used to, future meetings will be difficult to schedule.
