4. Nebraska Cornhuskers

You wouldn’t know it by how people talk about them now, but from the 1960’s up until the 2000’s, Nebraska was one of the more dominant teams in college football.

The Cornhuskers were always a good but never great team until Bob Devaney became head coach in 1962. Immediately they became one of the best teams in the Big 8 Conference and they won four straight conference titles beginning in 1963. They began another four year streak in 1969, winning a pair of National title sin 1970 and 1971 along the way.

Tom Osborne took over in 1973 and he kept them dominant in the Big 8, but he was never able to bring them a national title.

That was until 1994 when the Huskers defeated Miami in the Orange Bowl. They followed that by embarrassing Florida in the Fiesta Bowl to win their second straight. Nebraska became a dynasty in the 1990’s with an Orange Bowl win over Tennessee to win their third National Championship in four years and their fifth all-time.

Since Osborne’s retirement, the Cornhuskers have gone through three head coaches and are now on their fourth. They also left the Big 12 to join the Big 10.

Georgia and Nebraska have squared off three times with Nebraska winning two games and Georgia winning one. Their first meeting was in the 1969 Sun Bowl and Nebraska embarrassed Georgia 45-6.

They wouldn’t play again until the 2013 Capitol One Bowl where Georgia came out on top 45-31. Nebraska got their revenge a year later with a 24-19 win in the Gator Bowl.
