2017 marks 125 years of Georgia football, so why hasn’t the school said anything about it?

Who doesn’t like birthdays? No one, and we especially love birthdays when they fall on milestone years. It doesn’t matter if we’re celebrating the birthday of a person or not. We see birthday celebrations for businesses, schools and even athletics.

In 1969, college football celebrated the sports 100th birthday. The Texas Longhorns even wore a special logo on their helmet to honor that.

Georgia football has celebrated its own milestone birthday before. In 1992, for the first time ever, Georgia put a logo at midfield. That logo wasn’t the power-G, it was the “100 Years of Georgia Football” emblem that was also patched on to the teams jerseys.

In 1992, Georgia football did all it could in the pre-internet era to make you aware of the fact that the program had just turned 100 years old. That is why in 2017, it seems like the athletic department is ignoring the birthday.

Just visit the football page on georgiadogs.com. There’s headlines of course, an ad for Herschel’s Famous 34, links to pages for Georgia’s clear bag policy and the NCAA Tennis Tournament in Athens, and some more good information. But nothing about the team turning 125.

What gives? By now I expected a special logo to be used as a patch and as a logo to put on the field and around Sanford Stadium. I expected a couple of videos from our awesome production team celebrating the past 125 years of Georgia football.

But so far, nothing. We’ve been through spring practices and the G-Day Game. No mention of the program turning 125 years old then. Maybe they’re waiting for the beginning of the season. Kickoff is only 107 days away so there’s not that much time yet to promote this big birthday.

You’d think that they might wait to make a big deal out it one the programs actual 125th birthday. But That’s actually already past since Georgia’s first game was played in January of 1892.

Or maybe, there going to do a 125th anniversary celebration next year despite the fact that the precedent is to celebrate birthdays, not anniversary’s.

Regardless, it just seems like the marketing and production teams for Georgia football are missing their chance to do some great work. So if the school isn’t going to do it, I guess the fans will have to celebrate 125 Years of Georgia Football ourselves.
