Former Georgia Bulldogs basketball player Lamar Heard has passed away at the age of 55 , according to Chip Towers of Dawgnation.com. Heard had been ill and in the hospital since early this month.

Heard was a member of Georgia’s only Final Four team. He was a captain for the 1983 team, which was by far the most successful in school history. Heard played for head coaching legend Hugh Durham. He was a pivotal part of the squad which made a historic run in 83. On their way to the Final Four, the Dawgs defeated a St. John’s team that featured Chris Mullen and a North Carolina team which included a young Michael Jordan. Georgia was eliminated by eventual champion North Carolina State.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that this was the last time Georgia went to the final four. The team that year showed itself to be one for the ages in terms of UGA basketball and Heard was one of the reasons why.

Lamar Heard played for 4 years at UGA. After college , he was selected in the 10th round of the 1983 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. He ended up spending some time in Israel as well pursuing a professional career. We here at Dawn of the Dawg send out our condolences to the Heard family.
