2017 marks 125 years of Georgia football, yet neither of the school or the team seem to be celebrating it.

The countdown to kickoff reaches 99 days today. Yet there is still no mention from the university of the fact that Georgia football turns 125 this year.

But how does a football team go about celebrating a birthday, especially one as monumental as a 125th birthday? Well there are a few ways actually. And they all have the potential to be a lot of fun and make a lot of money for the university.

Alternate/throwback uniforms

This was a big topic at Dawn of the Dawg several months ago leading up and in the days after the blackout game. But it definitely belongs in a discussion of how Georgia can celebrate the football teams 125th birth-year.

Georgia has had one look for 53 of those 125 years so wearing the tried-and-true red helmet, red jersey and silver britches is a good celebration for much of Georgia’s football history. But what about the other 70-plus years?

I’ve said for years that the Wally Butts era has been very neglected by the program. One way that Georgia can show homage to the teams first prolonged period of greatness is with throwback uniforms. And what better time to revive Georgia’s 1940’s and 1950’s look than this year?

Wearing red pants on the road or white pants in one game would also be a good way to celebrate 125 years of Georgia football because of their importance to Georgia’s history.

Collectible trading cards

More from Dawn of the Dawg

What sports fan doesn’t have a place in their hearts for trading cards? Sure video games and over-saturation in the market have hurt the sports trading card industry. But they haven’t lost their novelty at all and a set of cards celebrating 125 years of Georgia football.

Who wouldn’t love to collect a set of cards containing players like Todd Gurley, Herschel Walker and Charley Trippi, coaches like Vince Dooley and Wally Butts, and games like the 1943 Rose Bowl and 1981 Sugar Bowl?

Pre-game videos

I first started going to Georgia games when I was three years old in 1996 and one of my favorite parts of going to games was the battle hymn video with Larry Munson’s narration. And in recent years, the video production team has made numerous great videos.

This would be a great year for that team to release their best video yet, one featuring some footage from deep in the video library that most fans have never seen. If there are any videos featuring Vernon “Catfish” Smith, Frank Sinkwich and other players from the 1910’s, 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, this would be a great opportunity to use them.

Special logo

In 1992, to celebrate 100 years of Georgia football, a special logo was made. the logo was used around Sanford Stadium and was even the first midfield logo ever placed on the field. The team also used the logo as a patch on the jersey’s and on t-shirts, jackets and hats.
