The Georgia Baseball team had a pretty rough 2017 season. It should therefore be of little surprise that they did not have a huge number of players taken in the MLB draft this week. Gone are the days when UGA had 11 players selected in 2009. This year, UGA had only one current player drafted. It did also have two of it’s signing class for 2017 drafted as well, but it’s likely that only one of those ends up signing. So lets take a look at the UGA 2017 MLB draft class:

Drew Waters OF: 2nd Round Atlanta Braves

Waters would likely have been the crown of the 2017 UGA recruiting class. He’s a very toolsey outfielder who can hit from either side of the plate. He’s got plus power from the left side and average from the right. Waters’ is also a quick rangey player who should have the chance to stick in center field or at least be very good in right field. He is a local guy and has played at Etowah High school in Georgia.

Being picked so high and by the local team, it’s highly likely Waters signs with the Braves. It’s a shame but it’s also not that surprising. According to several reports, the Braves have had their eyes on him for a while and they want to get him in their system quickly to work on his development. With all the tools he has, coaching will be key and the braves have one of the top staffs around.

More from Dawn of the Dawg

Andrew Gist LHP: 9th Round Tampa Bay Rays

A senior signee, Gist profiles as a likely bullpen arm for the Rays. He’s had moment where he’s looked very good for UGA but lacks consistency. He has however shown an ability to strike people out, tallying 116 strikeouts in 122 innings this season. Gist also only walked 33 in that time which shows he has decent control.

Emerson Hancock RHP: 38th Round Arizona Diamond Backs

Another 2017 recruit, Hancock will likely stick with him commitment. Being taken so low means that the opportunity for him to get the bonus he will be looking for is very limited. He is more then likely to attends Athens. This helps ensure that UGA is bringing in another talented pitcher which they certainly need. Hancock was an All State pitcher at Cairo High School and is an intriguing talent.

We look forward to seeing him pay for the dawgs over the next few years.
