Georgia Football: Which 5-Star QB do UGA want?
How likely is Fields?
Well they have a shot! Georgia is right in there as the home school and they have been on Fields longer than the other contenders. If its down to Florida, Florida State, Auburn and Georgia, UGA was the first to offer him. Kirby Smart continues to have a very close relationship with the Fields family as well. He told Fields when he committed to Penn State that UGA would keep recruiting him until signing day. He’s been true to his word and their relationship is very good.
There is also the matter of family. Field’s younger sister is committed to play softball at UGA in 2019 and he’s from a family of dawg fans. He even said himself that he’s supported UGA himself in interviews. Unfortunately, with players like Fields, its about more than just support. He has a very realistic chance to be a first round QB in the NFL draft if developed correctly and that has to be his primary focus.
UGA does not have a reputation of putting Dual Threat QB’s into the league. In fact the current staff have not put any QB’s into the NFL. Jimbo Fisher at LSU has done just that and Gus Malzan at Auburn developed none other then Cam Netwon. Add in the high amount of competition currently at UGA and it’s clear that some other schools could offer a more optimal fit in the short term. But if UGA is building the monster that many think that they are under Kirby Smart, Fields will seriously consider joining.
What are the odds?
I wouldn’t say that UGA are the favorite, but I think they are right up there with FSU. Despite the two 5-stars at UGA right now, I don’t believe Fields will pick against Georgia based on competition. He is not going to enroll early and so it’s unlikely he is going to start anywhere in 2018. If Jacob Eason were to leave after that season, Fields would be in a battle with Jake Fromm for the starting job after that and I’m pretty sure he believes that he can win the job.
FSU isn’t exactly lacking for QB talent either, but Jimbo Fisher does have that track record. I think that has to be alluring for a player who knows he could play on Sundays. I also wouldn’t rule out Florida or Auburn, both of whom have weaker depth charts.
Right now I’d say that Georgia’s chances of bringing in Fields is about 30%. I’d Give FSU a slight edge at 35%, Auburn 20% and Florida 15%. Nobody really knows which way this is going to go but UGA are right in this.
