Georgia football: photo of a black Georgia helmet sparks rumors
The photo of the black Georgia football helmet proved to be a fake. But should Georgia wear black helmets again?

Thursday afternoon saw the Georgia football uniform rumor mill explode again. Last year around this time it was about black jersey’s and this year black helmets are on the docket.
Matte black with a glossy Power-G and possibly a black facemask to be precise. The rumor comes from the Georgia Bar Stool account and apparently the picture is a screenshot of a snap taken by someone in Georgia’s equipment office.

However, Radi Nabulsi of UGAsports.com stated that sources within the Georgia football team confirmed these to be a fake.
The photo is either photo-shopped or someone just bought the helmet to play this prank on the Bulldog Nation. Or maybe that’s just what they want us to believe.
It’s possible that these helmets were supposed to be a surprise. So someone inside the school telling Nabulsi, a trusted name covering Georgia football, that these helmets are not official would give the team a chance to surprise the fans if they do wear them this year.
Of course it wouldn’t be the first time that Georgia has worn black helmets. In 2009, the Bulldogs shocked the fans by wearing black helmets with black pants against Florida. Although that’s a game most Georgia fans would rather forget whether they’re a fan of the style or not.

Those black helmets were a bit different that the ones in the rumor though. In 2009, the helmets had a red facemask and a red oval around the power-G. Whereas the rumored helmets are all black with some white trim.
Personally I do believe that these helmets are fake. The fact that there’s no red anywhere means that they’ll clash with all three jersey’s. The black helmets from 2009 had enough red to look great with the white jerseys and matching black pants.
Unless Georgia has a fourth jersey and second pair of pants we don’t know about, I’d say that these are nothing more than rumors.
If these helmets do turn out to be legitimate, they’ll be instantly polarizing. You’ll hear one vocal group fall in love with the helmets and praise Georgia’s willingness to adapt. The other vocal group will bemoan the helmets and say that the current look is too good to mess with.
Me? I could care less. I will be satisfied as long as the Dawgs win. And winning in alternate styles always seems to legitimize them anyways. Whether it’s Georgia’s red pants from the 70’s and 80’s, the black pants when they debuted in the 33-6 beating on Wisconsin in 1998 or the original blackout against Auburn in 2007.
I’d much rather see a new silver helmet that’s a true homage to the 1940’s and 1950’s (not the over designed ones from 2011) than black helmets. But that’s just me.

Regardless, the fact that these rumors began around the same time as the black jersey rumors did last year is intriguing. It makes you wonder what Georgia football uniform rumor is going to start next, and which one will end up being true?
*Crosses fingers for red pants versus Tennessee in Knoxville.*
