More from Dawn of the Dawg

I was lucky enough to be at this one. My brother and I, along with a few friends, started out the day playing a little cornhole, some grilling, and drinking a few adult beverages. Great tailgate. We got rowdy and showed our visitors from the Bayou that they aren’t the only ones who know how tailgate.

Right before 10, we walked to Myers Quad where I was able to mark something else off of my sports bucket list; attend ESPN College Gameday live. We watched and cheered as the familiar “We’re coming to Your City” played and cheered as the cameras rolled by.

One of my favorite Dawgs ever David Pollack interviewed the greatest Bulldog ever, Herschel Walker. And of course, the College Gameday crew made their picks at the end of the show including the famous Lee Corso headgear pick.

Some superstitious Dawg fans near me thought that a Corso pick for UGA spelled certain doom for the Dawgs that day. So they began the chant, “DON’T PICK US! DON’T PICK US!” And he didn’t. He picked LSU.

That didn’t end well for LSU. Both teams were in the top 10. Both teams were led by top tier SEC quarterbacks. Georgia by the great Aaron Murray and LSU by former Georgia quarterback, Oconee County native and future first round NFL pick, Zack Mettenberger.

Both played well that day, but Murray had an extraordinary day, going 20-34 for 298 yards and 4 touchdowns. The last one he threw was a beauty to Justin Scott Wesley with 1:47 left in the 4th quarter to put the good guys up by what would be the final score of 44-41.

I have been to a lot of games in Sanford Stadium,  but this was the loudest I ever remember it being. From beginning to end, this was my personal favorite game day experience ever in Athens.
