3. Jarrett Stidham.

This one comes with an asterisk. We’ve heard this story before, very recently, in fact. Remember Jeremy Johnson? All the preseason Heisman hype for a guy who was unproven in the SEC? It almost seems like a case of the boy who cried wolf with Auburn.

But Stidham could be legit. He has the potential and the tools. He would definitely be higher on this list if he had played last year or faced anything except the questionable Big 12 defenses he faced during his short time as a starter at Baylor in 2015. Or if he had SEC experience.

The facts I just mentioned are also the reasons why I considered leaving him off this list. If the Dawgs played Bama or Arkansas this season, Jalen Hurts or Austin Allen would take Stidham’s spot here.

Gus Malzahn hasn’t even officially named Stidham the starter yet. And while it seems that he will do that before the season begins, Stidham will have to prove he’s worthy of the preseason hype against some SEC defenses for this writer to consider him elite.

His skill set (arm strength, accuracy, ball placement) and running offensive coordinator Chip Lindsay’s up tempo offense gets Stidham a spot on this list, though. The Dawgs will travel to Auburn to take on Stidham and the Tigers in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry on November 11th.
