How does 2017 stack up:

Well other than Kizer, they didn’t exactly lose a lot of talent. Only one other player was drafted and that was in the 7th round. Kelly also made big changes in his coaching ranks. He fired both coordinators and brought in two young well regarded coaches. Mike Elko headed up the defense for Wake Forest for the past three seasons. Last years Wake Forest defense was a top 20 unit which is impressive for that school. Elko should have a lot more talent at Notre Dame this year then his has previously. A lot of national media sources think this could be a home run hire.

Chip Long has come over from Memphis to take over as offensive coordinator. Of course on this side of the ball, Brian Kelly should still be heavily involved. Play calling is where Kelly made his name and I’m sure he’s still heavily involved in this. We don’t really know what sort of effect either of these hires will have although they have received a lot of press. It’s very possible that because it’s Notre Dame, people just like to talk about them. However there does seem to be a train of thought that the Irish will be better in 2017 because of these coaches. Whether that is the case we will have to see.
