2007: Georgia 26, Alabama 23

Although I was only 13 years old when this game took place, I remember it like it was yesterday. This was a game between two ranked teams down in Tuscaloosa in the very early stages of the Nick Saban era at Alabama.

Georgia was led by future NFL number one overall pick Matthew Stafford at quarterback as the Dawgs faced an undefeated Alabama team in a hostile environment.

The game was exciting to watch til the very end. Georgia went up by a score of 20-10 late in the 4th quarter and seemed to be on its way to victory. However, the Crimson Tide stormed back with 10 unanswered points near the end of the game which forced the game into overtime with the teams in a 20-20 tie.

With all the momentum on its side, Alabama took possession of the ball first in overtime. The Georgia defense held its own and held Alabama to a field goal. Georgia then needed a field goal to tie or a touchdown to win on the next possession.

On the first play of that possession, Matthew Stafford threw a touchdown pass to Mikey Henderson in the end zone, giving the Dawgs a 26-23 victory over Alabama.

The victory was one of Mark Richt’s most notable wins during his tenure at Georgia and is only one of a handful of games that Alabama has lost at home under Nick Saban. One can only hope that the Dawgs will return to prominence again soon and can compete with Alabama like they did in this game.
