What do they do well:

Like any coach on the hot seat, Butch Jones blamed his coordinators last year. Good way to get one more season right? Anyway, the new offensive coordinator Larry Scott wants to bring in a new spread formation apparently. This would help a dual threat QB by giving him more space on the field. That being said, it’s not like this is a hot shot coordinator who has done this before. He was the Vols tight ends coach last season and has never been an OC at a college program. In short, we don’t really know what this is going to look like.

The defensive line should be strong again. How they will replace Derek Barnett’s production, I don’t know, but if they get a bit more luck with injuries in 2017, the line should be stout. Kahlil McKenzie was a top ranked prospect for a reason and Kyle Phillips is another highly rated former recruit to keep an eye out for. Health has been the big issue for this unit as a whole. They have plenty of talent on defense but it’s a matter of staying healthy for a whole season.

On the offensive line, they should be improved compared to last year. They brought in Rock Gullickson form the NFL to head up their strength program. That should pay dividends as will adding one of the nations top 2017 recruits in tackle Trey Smith. Smith looks like he was born to play left tackle so if he can step right in, that would be a big hole filled.
