2. 2002 vs Georgia vs. Georgia Tech

I don’t remember the details of the three game losing streak to Tech from 1998-to-2000. I was only five when it started and eight when it ended. But I do remember my father, grandfather and uncle not being happy about it.

They felt better after beating the Jackets in 2001. But Georgia has beaten up on Tech for their entire life. Most of my recent memories against Tech involved losing. That changed after Thanksgiving 2002.

Georgia was ranked fifth in the nation with a record of 10-1. We were going to the SEC Championship game. tech was unranked and held a record of 7-4. But I don’t think anyone knew what kind of beating was on the horizon. After all, none of Tech’s four losses were all that lopsided and they actually defeated a North Carolina State team that was ranked no. 10 at the time.

Georgia took the lead early and never let up. tech could only muster a single touchdown. Georgia scored six with two different quarterbacks to win 51-7. David Greene, D.J. Shockley, Musa Smith, J.T. Wall, Terrence Edwards, Ben Watson and Fred Gibson all had days to remember.

After losing three straight just a few years earlier, the 2002 blowout showed that Georgia was back in firm control of the rivalry. The Bulldogs went on to win five more game in a row and have now gone 13-3 against Tech since 2001.
