1. Prep the night before.

Find and clean all coolers, grills, grilling supplies, canopy’s, and game day outfits. You can make a store run in the morning, of course. But you only have 6 chances a year to do this in the Athens. Do you really want to spend quality tailgating time walking around the Epps Bridge Parkway Wal-Mart looking for a grill brush, a Georgia shirt, and a cheap pair of khaki shorts???

2. Arrive early.

If it’s a noon kickoff (my least favorite time), 8 or 8:30. For 3:30 kickoffs, 10:30 at the latest. I actually prefer earlier if it’s a big 3:30 SEC on CBS contest. You want to allow yourself an ABSOLUTE minimum of 30 minutes set up time, 4 hours tailgating, and 30-45 minutes to get to the stadium.

3. If you’re invited to someone else’s tailgate, bring something.

Even if they say, “nah, man, you don’t have to bring anything,” still bring something. Even if it’s just  a couple of bags of chips or a 6-pack. A good tailgate can never have too much food or drink.
