Plenty of young talent coming in that defensive backfield.

What makes this defense so exciting is that it’s not just the front end. The back is starting to look better too. That’s not because the players back there are much better than last year. It’s because the amount of talent and depth that was brought in in the last recruiting class is really pushing for playing time.

DeAngelo Gibbs has the body of a 22 year old. He looks like he’s been in a college weight program for about 4 years and he looks really good. By mid season I fully expect him to be in some kind of starting spot. He just looks ready. Richard LeCounte is a bit further behind. He’s still a lot smaller and he needs to work on his tackling. However don’t let his size fool you, when he hits you, you stay hit. It might take a bit more time than with Gibbs, but he’s going to see the field in some sets. He just looks like a turnover machine.

There are a lot of young DB’s out there and the old guard are getting pushed. A name than not many will recognize that should be mentioned is J.R. Reed. Reed is Gibb’s cousin who transferred over from Tulane and sat out 2016. He looks really impressive and is pushing for the starting safety job right now. That just shows how deep this group is and how well Kirby Smart has identified top defensive talent.
