Georgia Football: What we saw at UGA fan day.
Finishing up.
Overall, the biggest takeaway that I can put forward for this practice is simple. This team is DEEP. A lot of the 2016 starters are back for 2017, but most of them look like completely different players. The defensive scheme seems to be fully understood and guys just look bigger and faster than they were last year. A lot of credit needs to be given to Scott Sinclair and the strength and conditioning coaches. It looks like their hard work is really paying off.
The other thing is that there is a reason top ranked recruiting classes like the one UGA just brought in make an impact on the field. Most of the freshman players are not going to see the field in 2017, at least not on offense and defense. But they are pushing the older players hard and a lot of them are nipping at the veterans heels. When you see a guy like Swift truck over a junior, or Blount out block veterans, it makes a statement. These guys are going to take your job if you don’t improve. Everyone steps up and gets better or they get replaced. This is exactly the type of mentality Smart has talked about since the day he arrived. We’re not quite there yet, but it’s very clear that the depth is being built.
If I’m being honest, I really can’t remember the last time I was so excited for a football season. I don’t think we’re going to go undefeated or anything. I don’t even think its a guarantee we win the SEC East. But I know we’re going to be a lot better this year and the future is very, very bright.
