Are the weapons improving?
We’ve talked about this before, but once again, Jacob Eason will not lack for weapons in 2017. Wide receiver, tight end and running back are all dramatically improved compared to last year. Terry Godwin is likely going to be the go to receiver for Eason and is best used in the slot but he got additional work out wide on Saturday. This gave Mecole Hardman and Akhil Crumpton some more looks in the slot and both looked really good.
Issac Nauta is going to be the staring tight end for UGA this year and he has a real shot to be an all SEC player. Charlie Woerner will likely be the second tight end in the group and he and Nauta will be matchup nightmares. One of the things that we have seen a bit in practice is UGA moving both of these players out wide in some setups and then having Godwin and running backs in the slot. That formation is going to cause havoc when they pull it out.
One of the things that we’ve continued to see is UGA using it’s weapons in different ways this year. It seems like there is going to be a real focus on using the same personnel in different sets to help the offense play more up tempo. That’s really exciting and players like Nauta, Sony Michel and Godwin should all really benefit from the opportunity to see these different looks.
