The defense was affected by the heat.

Smart wasn’t entirely happy with his defense on Saturday when the heat seemed to really get to them. Kirby Smart said that the offense ‘dominated’ the designated 3rd down period. That’s an area that UGA has to tighten up on in 2017. This team needs to find a way to get those stops and stop people from scoring after last years redzone woes.

That being said, the heat does this to teams at this point in camp. A lot of young players, particularly the freshmen are really starting to hit a wall and that is to be expected. Something that was good for the defense was how much better they have been tackling compared to last year. Smart mentioned how pleased he was that even with the heat, the defense found a way to bring down the UGA running backs. Considering the level of RB’s UGA has, that’s never a bad thing.

Georgia is going to kick off the season with three straight night games. Fans shouldn’t be worried about the heat getting to players at this point. There is still plenty of time before the season arrives and this is another good learning experience for a unit that is expected to be really good this year.
