Two-year starter cornerback Malkom Parrish was injured Wednesday, opening up a spot for Georgia football.

Malkom Parrish missed practice on Wednesday with an injury. No word has come out about a time-table for his return, but if it was a more serious injury, we would probably already know the severity.

However, Parrish may have to miss the first game of the year against Appalachian State. That game is only three weeks away so Kirby Smart and defensive coaches are already hard at work at selecting a replacement. But for the Appalachian State game, I think the replacement is obvious; Aaron Davis. And no one else is really close at cornerback.

Davis is a former starter at cornerback who was moved to safety where he has either started or been a major contributor off the bench. he was also the backup at the star position last year. Basically, he might as well be a three-year starter with how much playing time he’s had since coming to Georgia as a walk-on in 2014.

And it is because of his experience not only as a starting corner, but as a nickel and safety that makes this a no-brainer. Appalachian State is a run-first team. We’re going to need tackling and physicality from the corner positions more so than tight coverage.

And I’m not saying that Davis can’t cover. On the contrary, he’ll bring the physicality and sound tackling that will help shut down Appalachian State’s run game.

If Parrish is still injured after that, then coaches should be open to other players at corner.

But based on statements by Smart, there hasn’t been much separation between the younger defensive backs.

Davis’ switch to the position might be full-time until Parrish returns. We should just hope that Parrish returns before Georgia meets teams with great passing games.

Next: Georgia gets another commitment

Parrish is a very underrated cover-cornerback. He doesn’t get much attention from media because he’s so good at his job. It’s rare that quarterbacks throw his direction.
