Georgia football: Why Justin Fields isn’t coming to UGA, and why that isn’t a big deal

One of the biggest quarterback prospects in America is considering Georgia football. But getting him to come to Athens is a long shot.

The biggest prospect on Georgia’s radar is Justin Fields. For those unaware, Fields is the no. 1 quarterback in the class of 2018 from Kennesaw. If he comes to Georgia, he’d easily be the best athlete at quarterback to come to Athens since D.J. Shockley.

It’s no wonder why the Bulldog Nation wants this kid so bad. He’s good and will likely have a stellar career in college. Just one problem with that, he’s not coming to Athens. And you shouldn’t worry about that too much.

Because it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with Georgia. We shouldn’t panic because the best quarterback doesn’t want to play in front of the Georgia fans, for Georgia coaches.

But do you really think that the no. 1 prospect in America is willing to come in as a third-string quarterback? No, this kid is going to want to hit the field as soon as possible and earn the starting job almost immediately.

With Jacob Eason having the starting job nailed down and with Jake Fromm ready to take over in case of an injury or when Eason leaves, where is Georgia supposed to work in Fields? The ideal scenario is to preserve Fromm’s redshirt and for Eason to leave as a junior. Fromm takes over as a redshirt sophomore and plays three years.

Meaning we might only get one year out of Fields as a starter in that scenario. Maybe two if Fromm leaves after his junior year. Fromm knows he may only have to wait two seasons with one of those years being a redshirt. Fields is looking at 2021 or 2022 to become the starter.

Next: Big week for recruiting

I’m not accusing Fields of cowering from competition. It will be smart for him to look elsewhere so he can start soon. I just hope when he makes that choice, he stays out of the SEC and out of our way.
