The Georgia Football team open up the 2017 football season this Saturday against Appalachian State. Most Vegas odds and point spreads have the Dawgs sitting as a 14 point favorite over the Mountaineers.

Georgia, at times, has a habit of playing down to its competition (see 2016 Nicholls and Louisiana Lafayette games). The fan base will certainly become uneasy if the Dawgs struggle against the Mountaineers on Saturday. A lot of fans are very excited for this season and there is no doubt that a slow start will spark some fear. Kirby Smart was brought into Athens to change the culture of the program. Going forward, games like this need to be big time wins.

To their credit, the Mountaineers have built themselves quite a program. They burst onto the scene many years ago by beating Michigan in one of the biggest upsets in college football history. They also took Tennessee into overtime last year.

Despite the rumblings that the Dawgs may be on upset alert this Saturday, I think Georgia will take care of business against Appalachian State and look good doing it. Georgia simply has too much size, speed, and skill to not ultimately pull away from the Mountaineers even if the game is close early.

Georgia has arguably the best backfield in America and returns 10 defensive starters from last year. I do think Appalachian State will keep things close for a quarter or two. But ultimately I expect the Dawgs to take full control of this game by halftime. That should mean that they put the Mountaineers away early in the 3rd quarter.

Final Score Prediction: Georgia 34, Appalachian State 17
