Georgia Football: 5 takeaways from the App. State game.
Running backs look impressive.
Fortunately, Georgia doesn’t need a particularly good QB to beat a lot of teams. It was pretty clear that once again, Georgia is going to be loaded at running back. While it took them a little while to get going, once Nick Chubb and Sony Michel found some space, they took over.
Chubb looked like he was fully back from injury for the first time since last seasons opening game. On several runs, he displayed nifty feet and an initial burst of speed that took him past the first defender. Once he did that, he ran into space with power and is always a real terror to bring down. That burst is what was missing last year so it’s a great sign to see that back.
Sony Michel also looked like he was at his best. He offers such a fantastic contrast to Chubb in that he is so much shiftier in the backfield. You could see how defenders that were tired from tackling Chubb made clear misses on Michel later in the series because they just weren’t expecting that change of speed.
Freshman D’Andre Swift really showed out. He looked like he has taken charge of the #3 running back job and will also see reps in the slot. He was shifty, showed good hands and more importantly, did a good job in pass protection. That’s exactly what Kirby Smart wanted to see from Swift this season. He looks like he is going to be a really exciting player for UGA for a long time.
