Georgia Football: 5 takeaways from the App. State game.
Special team improvement.
Kirby Smart has talked a lot this off season about improving special teams. He brought in several graduate players to try and help in that regard. It was very encouraging to see that they seem to have made an impact so far.
Cameron Nizialek has really made an impact since signing this offseason. The graduate transfer averaged 44 yards a punt in the Ivy League. He did the same in his first game as a dawg and what a difference that makes. His punts were high and took a long time to come down. That really helped with the coverage. Unlike last season, it never felt like the opponent was going to break a big time run against us. When was the last time a UGA fan said that?
Rodrigo Blankenship also did well. He only had a short field goal attempt, but he made it alongside all of his points after. He impressed on kick offs, converting 5 of 6 of them into touchbacks. That’s a marked improvement on last year.

Having all those young freshmen really helped on the coverage units. It’s great to see so many big time athletes charging down the field. Hopefully, that should continue going forward and UGA can have the best special teams unit it has had in quite some time.
