Georgia Football got a win to kick off the season on Saturday. Mike takes a quick look at his play of the game.

This past Saturday night, the Dawgs experienced an extremely emotional game against a Sun Belt opponent.  Appalachian State is most well-known for an upset victory against Michigan that happened almost exactly a decade ago. They also took the Tennessee Volunteers to overtime last season in a game that showed this writer that the Vols weren’t the top 10 beast many folks thought they were.

As I expected and as one of my fellow writers Davis Kimball here at Dawn of the Dawg predicted,  the Dawgs took care of business. They moved to 1-0 with a 31-10 victory in a game that never seemed to be in doubt. Georgia’s defense was an obvious mismatch for the Mountaineer offensive line and while the sack numbers for the game didn’t show it, our defensive front 7 gave them serious problems all night. Really no big surprise there. The offense was where the true surprises and the play of the week came from.

Does the “play of the week” always need to be a big run by Chubb or a kickoff return for a TD? Should it always be a pick 6 or a forced fumble returned for a touchdown that swings momentum? I say no. The play of the game should be the most significant play in the entire game for the short-term and long-term future of the program. I believe it to be the one that will be remembered 10-20 years in the future.
