Georgia Football: Dawgs in the NFL Week 1
Matthew Stafford, QB Detroit Lions
Of course, we’re going to finish this look with Stafford. Having just signed a contract that made him the highest paid player in the NFL (for now), all eyes will be on him this week. Stafford has been good ever since he was drafted and without him, the Lions would not be competitive. He’s not an Aaron Rogers kind of player transcends his position. However, he’s a good QB who can lead a talented team to victories.
Until he signed that contract, it seems like nobody has even mentioned the lions this offseason. They have flown under the radar and a lot of ‘experts’ seem to think that they are in line for another .500ish season. I’m not so sure. Stafford has plenty of weapons around him this season and although his O-line is not going to be as good as last year, I still think the offense overall will be explosive.
I also think their defense could surprise a few people. They have struggled with injuries for a few seasons. But if they can stay healthy, they could keep games close and that’s dangerous. Stafford has a knack for winning close games if given the chance. If the scores are close, I think he’ll find a way to win out.
The Lions play the Cardinals on Sunday at 1.00pm EST.
Next: Player to watch for this week vs Notre Dame.
He starts this season against the Cardinals who are a trendy team this season. Don’t be surprised if he makes a few people sit up on Sunday and realize that this Lions team is actually pretty good.
